The four living species within the family Anhingidae are comorant-like waterbirds found mainly in tropical habitats. Their long, thin necks give them the alternative name of "snakebirds". They generally have blackish plumages, and all have webbed feet and sharply pointed bills adapted for spearing the fish they prey on. Representatives of the family are found in South and Central America, sub-Saharan Africa, southern Asia and Australasia.
