Site Details
The largest sea loch in the British Isles, separated from the Irish Sea by the Ards peninsula. Famous for wintering flocks of Pale-bellied Brent Geese Branta bernicla hrota from the Canadian Arctic; most of the world population winters in Northern Ireland. East shore from A20 Newtonards-Portaferry road; west shore via various minor roads off A22 Belfast-Downpatrick road. Frequent car ferry service from Portaferry to Strangford at the southern end of the Ards Peninsula. WWT Castle Espie is on the western shore near Comber.Site Photographs
