Site Details

The reserve is situated at the southwestern end of Breydon Water and is a mixture of wet grassland and shallow floods.

NB. A section of bank along the north side of Breydon Water upstream of the A12 Breydon Bridge is being worked on in 2013 by the Broadland Floodwater Alleviation Project. This is a popular and easy access route for people (including birders) to access both this part of the estuary and the RSPB’s Berney Marshes reserve beyond. The works are programmed to take place between April and August so the footpath will have to be closed during this period and for at least one month afterwards to allow the vegetation to re-establish.

Directions

The reserve TG465050 is remote, and as a consequence underwatched, with access only by foot or train. On foot, park near the Asda superstore in Great Yarmouth (behind the railway station) TG519082 and walk along the northern bank of Breydon Water for 4 miles to reach the reserve. Alternatively, take the train from the railway station in Great Yarmouth and request it to stop at Berney Arms Station TG460053.

Access

Access is at all times, but take careful note of the train times to ensure that you do not have a long walk in both directions! There are no hides on the site, and the reserve can be watched from public footpaths. Nearby there is the Berney Arms pub TG467051.

Parking

Please note that a 2-hour time limit is now in force at the Asda car park in Great Yarmouth (TG519082) with fines for overstaying.
